Teen Connection Tutor/Mentor

Volunteer Job Description

 

 

Essential Functions:

·         Provides specific academic support to junior high and high school students, ages 12-18.

·         Provides general supervision of the study lounge as assigned on a rotating basis.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

·         Commits to full school year of service for an individually specified number of hours weekly.

·         Maintains an agreed upon mentor arrangement with between 2 and 5 students.

·         Maintains files on each assigned tutee, including program contract compliance documentation, grade reports, enrichment program documents, etc.

·         Assists each assigned tutee with the development of an academic/enrichment portfolio of exemplary work to eventually be used in the college application process.

·         Works one-on-one and in small groups (3-5 students) on homework, academic support, portfolio preparation, and other areas of students’ individual activity plans.

·         Attends Teen Connection celebrations and presentations.

·         Understands and implements Developmental Assets model of the SEARCH Institute.

·         Attends staff meetings focusing on ongoing training, support, and administration of the program.

·         Participates in 20 hours of staff development training annually as assigned.

·         Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Position Specifications:

·         Must have completed or be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program of study.

·         Tutoring experience helpful but not required.

·         Good interpersonal skills; must be comfortable with teenagers.

·         Ability to commit to a minimum of three hours and a maximum of 18 hours per week.

·         Ability to pass the Illinois Department of Human Services background and fingerprinting checks.

 

Additional comments:  Volunteer schedule must be consistent. Volunteer staff members are to make arrangements for changes in agreed upon hourly commitment at least two weeks in advance and must commit to the entire school year (Sept. 2003 - June 2004).  

 

Teen Connection Center Hours:   Monday - Friday:   3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

 

Staff Trainings and Meetings:        One Saturday per month:   10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

 

Work Site:  Gads Hill Center, located at 1919 W. Cullerton St., is within two blocks of the CTA Blue Line.
