Youth Services
New Horizons was begun in 2008 and pairs 6th graders at J.C. Orozco Community Academy with adult mentors. By developing positive relationships with volunteer professionals, children can improve their grades, attendance, and behavior. The program is funded by the US Department of Education.
We’re continually improving the service we provide to 5-12 year olds and their families in Club Learn. The program meets after school and all day during school holidays and the summer. The program served 268 low-income, at-risk 1st – 8th graders from the Pilsen, North and South Lawndale, and Back of the Yards communities at three sites, including one in partnership with Cesar E. Chavez Multicultural Academic Center. Club Learn provides an array of services to guide school-age children away from the delinquency too common in their communities and to help break the cycle of educational disadvantage.
Our young people are building skills, improving their resistance to bullying, and getting help to raise their grades and stay in school. The hard work we do with limited resources is paying off: the Wallace Foundation recognized Club Learn as one of 16 leading out-of-school-time programs in New York and Chicago. They’re documenting the need for management, financial, and technology resources in agencies like Gads Hill.
Teen Connection, our eight-year-old college preparatory program, continues to graduate each senior fellow with a college acceptance letter in hand. The 80 teens served in Fiscal Year 2008 have caring tutor/mentors from local universities who work closely with them to build academic skills and develop the tools they need to succeed in college. Our fellows’ experience is enriched by collaborations with community partners, including UIC and the Illinois College Access Network.
