Sergio
Sergio arrived in Chicago as a 12-year-old who had to start the sixth grade with no knowledge of English. Despite his family’s newness in the United States and their lack of resources, his parents had high expectations for him in school. None of his teachers, however, had high expectations when he switched to English-only classes in the seventh grade. But because Gads Hill Center’s Teen Connection program encouraged him and had faith in him, he excelled in school. "I don’t come to Teen Connection just to help with my schoolwork," Sergio says, "I come because I love it here." Thanks to the support he gets at Teen Connection, Sergio has earned a 3.8 GPA.
"Teen Connection motivates me and gives me the tools to do my best."
A junior this year, Sergio looks forward to continuing success in school and is preparing to go to college in 2010.
