Héctor & Luis
Héctor is a professor of Spanish and Latin American literatures and languages. Julio, Hector’s mentee, is very shy, and more comfortable communicating in Spanish than in English. The fact that Héctor is bilingual allows him to act as an intermediary between Julio’s parents and his English-speaking teacher, but Héctor strives to not just serve as a translator for the family, but to also build a relationship between them and their son’s teacher. Héctor loves being a mentor. He’s not just a tutor helping a child with schoolwork, but also serves as a role model for Julio as well: a successful bilingual, bicultural adult whose Mexican heritage is a huge part of his life. "It feels great," he says, "knowing that I’m able to make a difference in a child’s life."
