  Teen Connection

Program Description

Teen Connection helps students living in high-risk neighborhoods achieve their academic dreams through:

Academic Preparation: Gads Hill provides tutoring for homework, SAT/ACT preparation, and subject area weaknesses identified by Fellows. All Teen Connection Fellows work one-on-one with an assigned tutor on a weekly basis, focusing on reading comprehension, computer literacy, and math skills.

Portfolios: Fellows annually compile a collection of individually selected work that exemplifies their achievements. By the 11th grade, the portfolio serves to inform their college applications. Each May, Teen Connection Fellows publicly present their portfolios to parents, families, teachers, staff, and other community members. They develop confidence in public speaking and reflect on their accomplishments.

Service Learning & Summer Enrichment: We guide Fellows to service learning opportunities related to career interests, as well as summer enrichment programs lasting at least 2 weeks to broaden their horizons -- such as the Presidential Scholars Classroom in Washington, DC, the Chicago Botanic Garden's College First program and pre-college programs on university campuses.

College Tours & Retreat: We plan a minimum of three college tours per year. Teen Connection Fellows attend pre-tour workshops to review university materials, learn about the roles of university staff, and to develop a series of questions to ask. Additionally, Teen Connection Fellows participate in an annual group retreat intended to motivate and inform them about the college process. Retreats include testimonials from current college students and talks by college staff.

Financial Aid Counseling: A college counselor works with Fellows and their families to understand the financial processes related to college and to develop a financial plan. College counselors locate online scholarship resources for Fellows and assist them in submitting scholarship and FAFSA applications.

In addition, we provide monthly parent meetings covering a host of topics related to academic and financial preparation for college. The college counselor meets with parents of juniors and seniors to specifically focus on college access. The Teen Connection preparatory program is designed to create a community of college-bound peers supported by mentors and tutors.
