Felix, 10
Celina had two sons in Gads Hill programs when she signed up ten-year-old Felix for Club Learn. Unlike her other boys who couldn't wait for the school day to be over to join their after-school friends, Felix didn't want to have anything to do with the kids in his club. From his experience being bullied at school, he was prepared to hit anyone who got out of line with him.
In less than six months, Felix has made remarkable strides with the help of his conscientious group worker. Not only is he better able to manage conflict resolution, he is also showing leadership qualities. Although still quiet, Felix gets along with everyone and is making friends.
Alexandra, 9
When Alexandra started Club Learn at age nine, she was so shy she wouldn't even respond when she was asked a question. Her group worker, Mary, coaxed her little by little to bring her out of that very tough shell. At first Alexandra would only speak Spanish with Mary, but soon, Alexandra engaged with other students and began helping the children in other clubs with their homework.
Christina, in the group for six- and seven-year-olds, looked up to Alexandra and followed her lead. Known as "Alexandra's little assistant," Christina is now offering to help others, too. Having her own assistant at such a young age gave a tremendous boost to Alexandra's confidence, who now speaks English in the classroom. "I'm going to be a teacher when I grow up," Alexandra told Mary, who has no doubt Alexandra will be anything she wants to be.
