Cherelle and Dennis
Cherelle, a single mother in North Lawndale who left an abusive husband, was looking for better daycare for her five-year-old son, Dennis. Between his food allergies and respiratory problems, she is constantly worried about his well-being. After touring the Child Development Center and observing the staff interact with the children, Cherelle knew that she had found the right place.
When Dennis started, he didn't know his letters or numbers. After four months, Dennis is counting in both English and Spanish. He is also singing, rhyming, and can spell his first and last name. Now when Cherelle picks him up, Dennis doesn't want to leave, and insists on staying until the Center closes. "I feel very safe that he's with people who will make good decisions, and he's near an Emergency Room, just in case," Cherelle said.
With help from the Center's Emergency Assistance Fund, Cherelle was able to pay her electricity bill while she looked for permanent employment. Cherelle now has a full-time job and peace of mind that her child is in a safe and nurturing environment.
