In 2002, Gads Hill Center opened the Child Development Center. It is situated in North Lawndale at the Center for Families and Neighbors of the Sinai Community Institute. The Center provides comprehensive pre-kindergarten services, Head Start, and child care services for 3-to 5-year-olds. Also at the Child Development Center is Club Learn, Gads Hill Center's after-school educational program for children in first through eighth grade. We provide family support service for all participants and consistently support parents in their role as their children's first teacher.
Statistics:
- Our families are low-income. Often working two or more low-wage jobs, these families earn between $12,000 and $21,000 a year for a family of four.
- 90 percent of the families we serve are headed by a single female care provider who either work full time or are enrolled in an education or job training program.
- North Lawndale ranks among the worst communities in Chicago in a variety of health indicators such as low birth weight, births to teen mothers, and high levels of lead among children from birth to age 6.
- In 2003, North Lawndale had 514 violent crimes per square mile compared to 175 violent crimes per square mile city wide.
