Community and Family Services

  • Seniors' Club

Each week, Gads Hill Center provides a place for recreational, educational, and cultural activities for seniors. In addition to weekly socializing and regular bingo games, seniors enjoy field trips, parties, and performances from visiting dance and theatre groups.
  • Community Literacy

Gads Hill Center's Community Literacy program provides English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction to 100 adults who have low literacy skills in Spanish and are reading at or below 5th grade level in English.

The program also sponsors Family Reading Nights for 250 adults and children each quarter.  This program helps the whole family to learn together and helps children in their learning and literacy process.

  • Salsa, Sabor y Salud

Salsa, Sabor y Salud provides weekly activities for children and families about nutrition and physical activity.  With our partner, Kraft Foods, we are implementing an innovative healthy lifestyle curriculum, developed by the National Latino Children's Institute.

  • Community Computer Labs

Our labs provide 42 computer workstations with Internet access.  The labs provide instruction on basic computer literacy, using the Internet and office productivity software.  The labs are used by Gads Hill programs and have open hours for the community.

  • Wireless Community Network Project

A collaboration with the Center for Neighborhood Technology, the Wireless Community Network Project is working to provide affordable broadband Internet access to the Pilsen neighborhood.  An antenna on the roof of the Cullerton Street facility broadcasts a high-speed Internet signal within a two block radius.  Families participating in this pilot project have computers configured to receive the signal at no charge to them.
